Photogrammetry & animation editing.

April/May 2024

I began creating 3D stop motion style set design. I have decided to use a theme based on a seaside pier to continue writing ideas and early script for a short story to showcase my work.

The set will be something I later 3D scan in a similar way to earlier work I created with Brightblack and Level-3.

As well I researched into other ways to scan my models using a Photogrammetry App called Polycam. This is a more accessible and simpler way to scan as I am able to do so using an iPhone without the need for a professional scanner. I find the results are very good quality and fairly close to the professional scanner standard.

But what this has allowed is the opportunity to work more independently scanning my work and experimenting with the different tutorials and functions Polycam offers.

These include a LiDAR mode which uses depth data from the LiDAR sensor to generate a reconstruction of the scan directly on your device, usually in a minute or less.

I was next able to start learning the process for exporting my scanned 3D images from both Polycam and my earlier professionally scanned model.

This was a complicated process to understand but eventually I was able to export my work from Mixamo where I had added an animation filter.

I was then able to import this animation into editing software called Blender, a free and open-source 3D creation suite software, Blender allows users to create 3D visualizations such as still images, 3D animations and VFX shots and edit videos.
